Lets talk about the basics of having a web site:
You can setup a blog, which is free, but they are limited.
We will talk about the importance of blogs later.
To have a real website, you need the following:
A domain
A web design software - we support Frontpage.
A simple graphic program - we suggest phot impact from “Ulead”
A Place to host your site - We have 5 accounts for you already
A finally - Submitting your site to the search engines.
Buying a domain does not mean its ready to be uploaded to.
It must be hosted on a web server.
Once you have your domain hosted, then it is ready to be uploaded to from your frontpage software.
I suggest you make a very simple main page and type some simplae text on it, and maybe a image.
Then publish it.
Make your your on the internet, and find the pubish website icon.
You will then be asked for the domain name (Type in the whole address: http://www.yourdomain.com )
Then you will need to put your ID and Passord in.
You will then see it connect.
You can see your files on your computer and the files on the server you are uploading to.
Press pubish web and watch the software upload your pages.
Please note: We will tell you about premade websites and templates later - We want you to learn how publishing works first.
Special Notes to help:
Using FrontPage for the first time:
So you just bought FrontPage and Your ready to start your website. Well, before you start, lets make sure where you are putting your files.
iI suggest you go to your root drive and create a new folder called websites. Then open FrontPage and make sure you are creating your multiple sites there.
This will help you stay organized and allows you to easily backup just one folder.
FrontPage and Uploading for the first time.
Here is a common problem I see after a customer uploads for the first time.
They build their first webpage, then upload, only to see the welcome page from the hosting company still there.
Here is way that happens.
Normally a hosting company uses a home page called “index.html”. FrontPage home page may be called “index.htm or default.htm”. You must rename your home page, or delete the home page on the hosting server. Then you will see your new webpage.
